Key Features & Benefits
- Superior Protection: Their unique fibrous structure provides natural shock absorption, cushioning eggs against impacts during transport more effectively than foam or plastic alternatives.
- Sustainability: They are 100% biodegradable, compostable, and recyclable. In proper composting environments, they can fully decompose within two to six weeks.
- Breathability: The porous nature of the molded pulp allows for natural ventilation, preventing moisture buildup and mold growth, which helps maintain egg freshness.
- Customization: Modern manufacturing allows for various sizes (4, 6, 12, 18, 20, or 30-egg capacities) and custom branding through direct printing or labels.
- Secondary Uses: Beyond packaging, they are popular for home gardening as biodegradable seed starters, as well as for arts and crafts projects.
Manufacturing Process
- Pulping: Recycled paper or plant fibers are mixed with water (typically a 3:1 ratio) and stirred until they form a slurry.
- Molding: The slurry is pulled onto shaped mesh molds using vacuum suction, ensuring uniform thickness and density.
- Drying & Pressing: The "wet blanks" are passed through high-temperature ovens to remove moisture and may undergo a secondary "hot press" to achieve a smoother finish and greater structural stability.
- Finishing: Optional treatments, such as water-resistant bio-coatings (which can reduce moisture absorption by up to 35%), are applied to ensure durability in refrigerated environments.
